Not Of This World

The other day I was driving down the freeway and noticed several bumper stickers with the NOTW logo. For Christians, we know that this means “Not Of This World”. At this time, as we approach Holy Week, let’s look at the scripture passage that is the basis for this symbol, considering what it means for us today.

13 But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. ~John 17:13-18 (NKJV)

In this part of Jesus’ Farewell Prayer, also known as the High Priestly Prayer, He lifts those who believe in Him in prayer to the Heavenly Father. He knows the persecutions, oppressions and sorrows that they will experience in His Name, and He knows the enemy will target them because of their allegiance to Him and their Kingdom citizenship. (After all, they are no longer of this world.) However, even in the midst of this reality, Jesus asks for those who call on His Name to experience joy, receive divine protection and by sanctified by the word of truth.

Sanctification does not mean total separation from this world. We live in it for a purpose, and we find that purpose in verse 18. The Father sent Jesus into the world so that the lost could be sanctified by His word and His finished work on the cross. Now Jesus sends those who believe in Him to share the good news throughout the world. This prayer and purpose is for all true believers, including you and me.

Sometimes we read this and think only of those who forsake modern-day conveniences to go to the farthest parts of the world. Though admirable, that’s not everyone’s purpose. God’s will is for each one of us to reach the world around us, often right where we are.

At Pure Flix, we believe we have been sent to the world of media entertainment, sharing the gospel in a rapidly-expanding, international medium. We also believe we have been sent to our communities, to our neighborhoods, and to our families, while we stand for truth and share the good news.

As you prepare your heart for Holy Week, my prayer is that you will see your world a little differently, realizing that it is where you have been sent for a divine purpose. May you also experience the reality of Christ’s unfailing joy, knowing He is with you to strengthen you and equip you in whatever He calls you to do in this world.

For His glory.
