Just One Thing

Everyone embraces new beginnings. I think that’s the attraction of the New Year. Just by definition, it carries a sense of renewal; an idea that we can hit the reset button. However, even though each New Year brings new resolutions for improvement, few follow through for real, effective change. Yet change is possible, and it starts with one key step.

Vision is Vital

Over the years I have developed a system of planning that is adaptable for use in any setting. In each case, it begins with one critical element, which is a vision statement that defines the future. This carefully crafted statement is simple yet powerful, and it can be recalled in any situation. Most of us already have a vision for life, but without writing it down, articulating it clearly, and implementing a plan to bring it to reality, it just remains a dream.

“Write the vision
And make it plain on tablets,
That he may run who reads it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.

~Habakkuk 2:2-3 (NKJV)

As we close 2016 and look ahead to 2017, I encourage each one of us to begin the year with a written vision statement. It will set us on course for the future and act as a compass to guide our decisions with greater clarity and focus. Since we are provided opportunities (both large and small) on a fairly regular basis, a vision statement becomes a vital reference for evaluating these prospects. Though we might be presented with a seemingly “good” offer or opportunity, such as a promotion, relocation or new business idea, it might not be good or right for us at all.

It’s Time to Start

If you have never crafted a vision statement, it’s not too late to start. However, let me offer one word of advice after reading countless vision statements: do not make it too small. Your vision should be big enough to influence others. So as you begin your statement, it is important to define these three parts: 1) what you want to accomplish; 2) for whom; 3) what are the results. With these components in place, you can run with your vision into a purposeful and impactful 2017.
