Not long ago, the advantage of owning a mobile phone meant that you could talk to anyone at anytime. Then the smartphone came along, and that meant you not only accessed phone service, but also emails and other personal computer functions virtually at your fingertips and in nearly every location. This rapid advancement in technology has brought with it benefits and challenges, especially for the Church.
Moving Beyond a Website
Though responsive websites (those that accommodate multiple platforms) continue to be essential in order to maintain an online presence for both congregants and communities, many church leaders and ministry organizations are looking at another avenue of access: the mobile app.
Recent studies indicate that approximately 85 percent of mobile usage occurs in apps. Though this percentage seems high, it isn’t that surprising when you consider their speed, ease of use and multiple functions. Apps allow you to transfer money, maintain a schedule, map a route, create a playlist, check the weather, watch a move, connect with friends, communicate with employees; the list goes on and on.
Location, Location, Location
For churches and ministries, being in the “right place” means being visible to the community. Whether it is the position of the signage or the proximity to a busy thoroughfare, location is key.
We must think of a mobile app the same way. On the phone’s landscape, an app allows the ministry to have a presence. And much like any other outreach effort, the more visible you are the better. Your app can contain every piece of information you want to communicate, as well as integrating all your social media channels. You can even create an interactive community, all in one location.
In our last discipleship and outreach effort, Pure Flix created the mobile app, I AM HOPE, to connect with teens regarding our upcoming film, I’m Not Ashamed. After installing it in a matter of seconds, they have access to a six-week discipleship curriculum, video clips, interviews and encouragement in their walk with Christ. Additional content will be added over time, including a devotional. So far, this app has been downloaded hundreds of times from coast to coast.
As you plan for the future, the first step is to evaluate your current website. Make sure it is responsive to a mobile device. Smartphone users (almost 70 percent of adults in the U.S.) expect nothing less.
Next, begin to research the many mobile apps that are available. See which format would work best for you. Feel free to go to the app store and download I AM HOPE and see the features. You’ll find the creativity and content impressive.
Finally, decide on your investment. You will find a variety of price points and options available. Some companies will work with you to streamline all your channels, even integrating a donation feature. Take your time and do your due diligence to find the right financial option for you.
If you currently have a mobile app, please leave a comment on your experience, letting us know how you have made it effective for your ministry. We look forward to hearing from you!
