Movie Ministry: Your Proven Church Growth Strategy

Getting the attention of your community is not easy, and every church competes with an increasing number of alternative weekend activities. That is why a movie ministry is so vital. Not only does it involve the existing congregants, it also engages those who might not otherwise take the time to attend a traditional church service.


By The Numbers


Though I have shared the numbers before, they are worth repeating: A 2015 survey by Lifeway Research and the National Religious Broadcasters found that about 40% of Americans watched a faith-based film the prior year. Of that number, 35% of those were “unchurched”.


A Proven Plan


Pure Flix took these numbers to heart (along with other market indicators) and built an Alliance Partner network to help churches create a movie ministry for outreach and discipleship. Starting with God’s Not Dead 2, our 2016 Easter release, we asked participating churches to provide feedback on their actual numbers, which would either prove or disprove our plan for church growth. The results were compelling.


These numbers appear unusual, but they provide us with a simple way to capture the average growth experienced by the churches that tracked their outreach campaign results. Here’s how it was broken down:

  1. For every 100 guests who attended the showing of the film, 60% (60) accepted the invitation to visit the next church service.
  1. From that group, half (30) attended the correlating small group study.
  1. At the conclusion of those sessions, half (15) remained with the church, resulting in a 15% gain from one campaign.
